A Blind Date...With Your Partner

By Frank Mcloughlin

There's only one thing scarier than a blind date and that's a date with your partner when you feel that you won't have anything to talk about except perhaps the usual topics like work, kids, money, etc... Heck, that's about as romantic as having your taxes done! Funnily, some people would rather be having their taxes done than go through that!

How many times have you been at a restaurant and seen couples eating together, obviously not enjoying each other's company and not having any kind of dynamic interaction? It's pretty sad to watch. Has that been you?!?

Well, it doesn't have to be that way. If you have a fear of being like the aforementioned couple or you've struggled to make conversation with your partner without "running home to Mama" and talking about the more routine matters of your daily lives, I'm here to tell you that there's help at hand. So, keep reading...

Here's a secret:

The best conversationists are not necessarily the best talkers, they're the best listeners!

And, when they do talk, they are as likely to be asking a question as sharing their opinion.

Think of a conversation as a wheel that you're rolling down a road. To keep the wheel rolling, every so often your going to have to give it a push. The push is the question you ask. When the wheel is stationary you are going to have to push it a few times in succession to get it going, but once it's going you need to push it less to keep it rolling.

Listen, people love to talk. They want to share their opinions, especially with an interested party, with someone who listens, someone inquisitive. Think about it: Are you any different? Is your partner? Who do you like to hang out with? With indifferent people who act uninterested in you or with people who value your opinion and appear to want to know you better?

So, how do you go an a blind date with someone you know?

If you're having difficulty having a conversation with your partner, it's very likely that there are tons of things that you don't know about each other. Not necessarily secret, clandestine things, but opinions, feelings, passions, interests, peeves, hopes, dreams, fears and aspirations (to name a few) that you might not have fully explored with each other. You don't have to get caught up in the why's of it all, either. You just have to resolve that you will start tapping into some of these topics. And, when you do, I'll bet you this: That you will find the person across the table from you brimming with things to share...

...just like you're on a first date. You are now working on staying together. You are turning your relationship around

Oh, by the way, you're going to have to hurry up and eat 'cause that wheel is flying down the road...
